Safari reports that it supports the WebM video format, and then produces no data when you actually record. The result was a testimonial that looked successfully submitted — the customer saw a thank-you screen — but the video file behind it was empty.
This affected anyone recording in Safari, on Mac or iPhone. It has been fixed:
- recordings in Safari are now captured as MP4, the format it genuinely produces
- the full length is kept, rather than the first second or two
- an empty recording is caught immediately and the customer is asked to record again, instead of silently submitting nothing
We also fixed playback: a video could be labelled with the wrong format, which Safari trusts, leaving a player that never starts.
Thank you to the customer who reported this with enough detail to track it down.
